Loom and Leaf Mattress Review [Relaxed Firm vs. Firm]

Unlike other manufacturers, Loom and Leaf takes a more friendly approach and offers just two models the Relaxed Firm and the Firm. We will help you decide what firmness model is best for you.

This review will take you through all the tricks and technologies that Loom and Leaf uses in its mattress designs and give you a definitive answer regarding the price vs. performance debate.

Loom and Leaf Relaxed Firm

Catering to sleepers that want a mattress not too hard and not too soft, the Loom and Leaf Relaxed Firm mattress should hit the sweet spot. It offers plenty of coziness while also giving the sleeper support.

Loom and Leaf Mattress Review of Layers

The Relaxed Firm model features a four-layer design. Each layer serves a different purpose.

At the base, it comes with a high-density foam core, which provides all the necessary support for the upper layers.

The second layer is 2” thick and is called the transition loft pad. Sitting right in between the two most important layers, the foundation and the memory foam layer, the transition pad basically complements both adjacent layers.

Note that this transition loft pad is also the component that gives the mattress a relaxed firm feel. It helps the bottom and top layer to work in tandem, ensuring the sleeper’s comfort and consistent support.

The third layer is one of the most important. It’s made of 5lbs viscoelastic memory foam. This is responsible for most of the body contouring. The foam boasts a gel-on-gel design unique to Loom and Leaf.

Between the even gel distribution, unique cooling properties, and the superior air circulation of the foam, this 3” combination layer can do wonders for restless sleepers. Or people that have issues with overheating during sleep.

The final layer, the cotton and quilt luxury layer, is hypoallergenic, flame retardant, and very breathable. Therefore, it also improves the temperature regulation properties of the mattress. A very important aspect of a non-flip mattress design.

Size Availability

Loom and Leaf Relaxed Firm mattresses come in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cali King sizes. Although they retail at different price points, even the largest size is quite affordable compared to most direct competitor products.

Furthermore, the mattresses aren’t too big. The height is consistent at 12”, given that there are no layers added or removed in between different sizes.

That said, the overall height will ultimately depend on the support you have or opt for. Loom and Leaf offer mattress and foundation bundles too. There are two foundation heights you can select: 4.75” and 8.75”.

Edge Support

This isn’t something high on the list of priorities for all mattress manufacturers. Case in point, the Loom and Leaf Relaxed Firm is just above average in this department.

The edges do collapse as a person sits closers. However, there’s no sense of roll-off or inevitable slipping. The edge support is there, it’s just not as firm as some sleepers would prefer it to be.

Loom and Leaf Relaxed Firm Feel

How best to describe the feel of this mattress? It really depends on the type of sleeper. Not everyone will experience the same thing and the same level of comfort.

Due to its unique design and construction, the Relaxed Firm model is more geared towards side sleepers, who don’t generally need a very firm mattress. The mattress needs to appropriately address hand support, shoulder support, and hip support.

Because of the way the human body sinks into a mattress when sleeping on the side, the Relaxed Firm mattress provides just the right amount of support. But does this mean that back and stomach sleepers can’t use it? No.

But it does mean that it’s not optimized for those two sleeping positions. Ultimately, it will also depend on the sleeper’s natural posture and any spine curvatures they may have. Some people may actually sleep better on the Relaxed Firm model than on a firm mattress designed for proper spinal support.

Mattress Weight Capacity

Queen and King mattresses have a weight limit of up to 300lbs per side. Therefore, it’s going to support even heavier individuals. But, the heavier the individual the more reliable the foundation should be too.

That said, smaller mattresses may only support up to 300lbs in total. Which is still good by today’s standards and for this price range.

However, the feel will be affected by the sleeper’s weight too. The memory foam isn’t that responsive and doesn’t have the best bounce-back reaction time. In regards to the feel, this means that a heavier user may sink a bit deeper into the mattress.

Again, this shouldn’t be an issue for side sleepers. But it can be a make it or break it aspect regarding back and stomach sleeping positions. While lighter individuals may find more than enough spinal support, heavier individuals will likely need a firmer mattress in order to get a good night’s sleep.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is very important for larger mattresses. Couples often complain about waking up because their partner moves too much in their sleep or gets out of the bed too often. In commercials, you will often see this tested with a glass of red wine witting on one side of the bed and someone jumping on the other side without it spilling.

In the case of the Relaxed Firm mattress, there’s very little motion transfer from side to side. This means that the motion isolation rating is high.

Because of this, the mattress isn’t only recommended for side sleepers but also for restless sleepers and couples.

Cooling Properties

The Loom and Leaf Relaxed Firm mattress uses cooling technologies and tricks in order to compete with other, more cooling-oriented competitor models. The gel-infused memory foam boasts superior air circulation to that of regular memory foam layers.

There’s also a bit of gel lamination introduced into the mix that helps with even heat distribution on the top layer of the mattress. But, at the end of the day, this model doesn’t have any groundbreaking cooling technology.

It can’t really compete with innerspring mattresses or even most hybrid mattresses for that matter. Mattresses with at least one coil or micro-coil layer have better overall airflow and heat dissipation properties.

That said, this mattress does help boost the body’s natural cooling. And, even though it may not be an ideal summer mattress, it certainly won’t promote overheating. But it also can’t guarantee to prevent some sweating.

Pros:

  • Good value in all sizes
  • Customizable sleeping experience
  • Natural cooling and lumbar cooling
  • Favors side sleepers
  • Great motion isolation

Cons:

  • Not ideal for back and stomach sleepers
  • Can sink in too much under heavier sleepers

Bottom Line

The Loom and Leaf mattress, although advertised as highly versatile and convenient to use, is a bit more niche when push comes to shove. The build does feature some impressively engineered layers and uses some cool tricks for cooling and improving the support.

However, this is a mattress made for side sleepers and people that prefer natural cooling. It’s also ideal for anyone that wants as little motion transfer as possible, as well as slower responsiveness or a slow reaction time on the foam layer.

Pricing-wise, the mattress is more affordable than many others with similar or less comfortable features. And, the durability and reliability of its performance are right up there with the best of them.

Loom and Leaf Firm

The Relaxed Firm is not the only model from Loom and Leaf. Because the Relaxed Firm model turned out more niche than expected, the manufacturer also offers a slightly stiffer model that caters to a different user base.

Because the differences aren’t too easy to spot, and they’re overwhelmed by the number of similarities between the two models, here are the main highlights in direct contrast.

Layer Design

The same top organic cover is used, but with two minor twists. The cover has 0.5” of padding. This is sewn in, firm padding which in turn makes the entire mattress feel firmer.

On top of that, the cover wraps the mattress noticeably tighter than it does in the Relaxed Firm model. What this accomplishes is less movement between the layers and better foam compression. A more compressed foam gives the mattress more responsiveness and bounce.

The transition layer pad is also slightly different. It boasts a higher density that’s clearly more rigid. This design leads to a different interaction between the memory foam layers and the foundation layer.

Size Availability

This model comes in all sizes, the same as the original. It also comes with the same customization options and bundle options such as adjustable bases, bed frames, and foundations.

Most beds are not compatible with an adjustable base so if you are looking for that feature this mattress is a great choice.

It’s also worth noting that even though the transitional pad is firmer and the top cover is thicker, the Firm model has the same 12” height. That’s largely because of the tighter compression applied by the cover. It squeezes everything just enough to maintain the height while changing the properties and feel of the mattress.

Edge Support

Since all the support layers are essentially the same, with minor differences, the edge support will be good. In fact, it may be slightly superior to that of the Relaxed Firm model due to the applied compression.

Loom and Leaf Firm Feel

Just how much firmer is this mattress compared to the flagship? Well, the feel is noticeably firmer. It’s not the type of mattress that would cater well to side sleepers, even for heavier individuals.

loom-and-leaf-firm-features

This doesn’t do much in terms of versatility but it does make the mattress ideal for back and stomach sleepers as well as people that change positions a lot during sleep, or combo sleepers.

Weight Capacity

Firm mattresses have the same weight capacity as Relaxed Firm mattresses. This means up to 300lbs for mattresses smaller than Queen size, and up to 300lbs on each side for Queen plus sizes.

Motion Isolation

Just because the transitional pad is firmer, it doesn’t mean that it will compromise the quality of the motion isolation. Cross-bed movements are still attenuated dramatically, perhaps slightly more so in this model.

That’s mostly because the memory foam layer, now more compressed, has improved responsiveness and better support. Even though it reacts faster, the weight distribution is slightly better. This means that movements from one side of the mattress should be even more unlikely to get picked up on the other side.

Cooling Properties

A firmer mattress doesn’t mean a cooler or hotter mattress. Despite the extra half-inch of thickness for the cover, there’s no noticeable difference in cooling properties.

Both mattresses promote natural cooling with minimal airflow, thanks to the gel-on-gel design. And of course, the gel panel featured in the lumbar area will dissipate plenty of heat outwards, from underneath the sleeper.

Pros:

  • Great motion isolation
  • Better edge support
  • Can help address some lower back issues
  • Fair pricing
  • Natural cooling and additional lumbar cooling

Cons:

  • Not good for side sleepers
  • May have too much bounce for some combo sleepers

Bottom Line

Is this also a niche mattress? Yes, it is. Is it significantly more different than the Relaxed Firm? Not as much as some people would like to believe. Although it boasts a considerably higher firmness rating, there aren’t that many design differences between the two.

That’s probably one of the reasons why the two models are available in the same sizes, height, and at very similar price points.

But, the Loom and Leaf Firm mattress caters to a very specific category of sleepers. It addresses backaches, bad lumbar posture, and it also caters to people that just don’t like feeling too snug when they’re sleeping.

TLDR:

Unlike other manufacturers, Loom and Leaf takes a more friendly approach and offers just two models to upgrade your bedroom comfort. One caters directly to those looking for a snug fit or optimal hip and shoulder support when sleeping on the side.

The other model is firmer but maintains the same level of comfort, cooling, and overall build quality. Once you know what kind of sleeper you are, picking the right model should only take a few seconds.
